The most common certification in North America is SA2025. This Snell rating is specifically designed for automotive motorsport use and replaces the previous SA2020 standard. SA2025 helmets undergo testing for:

• Rollbar collision scenarios

For most track day drivers — including drifting and club racing — SA2025 offers more than sufficient protection.

FIA helmet regulations, such as FIA 8859 homologation, are the international standard. These are required in professional series like FORMULA 1, WRC, and many IMSA categories. FIA helmets often include advanced composite shells and expanded energy absorption zones designed for extreme crash environments.

So which should you choose?

If you plan to stay within HPDE or grassroots motorsport, an SA2025 helmet is typically the best value. However, if you anticipate moving into sanctioned wheel-to-wheel racing, investing in an FIA helmet early can future-proof your purchase.
